When I began writing The Kindness Garden, I wasn’t thinking about teaching a lesson.
I was thinking about what happens after something difficult has passed.
After the noise.
After the mess.
After the moment when things don’t quite feel the same as they did before.
A story about rebuilding, gently
In The Kindness Garden, Yiayia and Sienna arrive in a village just after a storm.
The garden isn’t ruined — but it does need care.
Paths are untidy.
Plants are damaged.
Everything feels a little unsettled.
Together with the villagers, they begin again in small ways:
planting, watering, tidying, helping one another.
Not all at once.
Not perfectly.
Just gently.
That quiet rebuilding is the heart of the story.
Why kindness after the storm matters
Children experience “storms” in many forms — changes, big feelings, disappointments, moments of uncertainty.
They don’t always need explanations.
They need reassurance that small actions still matter.
Helping carry something.
Caring for a plant.
Doing something kind together.
These moments restore a sense of steadiness and belonging — without pressure or urgency.
Beyond the book
The Kindness Garden exists in a few different ways, depending on how families choose to engage:
- As a paperback or Kindle book for shared reading
- As a free mini story within the Story Garden
- As a companion activity pack with colouring and gentle kindness activities
Each piece stands on its own, but together they create space for reflection, conversation, and calm connection.
There’s no right order.
No expectation to do everything.
The garden grows at its own pace.
An open path forward
This blog marks the beginning of a small collection of reflections around The Kindness Garden — stories about kindness, helping, rebuilding, and the quiet ways children grow through change.
If you’re here as a parent, educator, or reader, I’m so glad you’ve found your way to this part of the Story Garden.
