Big Emotions & Storytelling: Helping Children Understand Their Inner World

Big emotions can feel like thunderstorms inside a child — sudden, loud, overwhelming. They don’t always know why they feel so strongly, and that can be frightening for them.

But storytelling… storytelling is like a gentle umbrella held over their head.

In the Story Garden, we use tales to help children explore their feelings safely. A character who gets frustrated when their tower falls. A fox who feels left out. A bird who’s scared to fly. These stories give children a way to talk about their own emotions without feeling exposed.

When a child says, “The fox was sad,” they might really be saying, “Sometimes I feel sad too.”
And when you respond with warmth, you’re telling them, “It’s alright to feel this way. I’m here with you.”

Stories help children slow down their emotions, understand them, and find gentle ways to move through them.

A little tip from Yiayia:
After a big feeling passes, invite your child to tell a story about it. “Once there was a little lion who felt VERY frustrated…” Let them guide the tale — it helps them process the moment with softness.

With warmth,
